How to Set Stop Loss and Take Profit Logically
Place exits using invalidation, structure, volatility, and reward-to-risk instead of arbitrary distances.
Stop loss defines where the trading idea is wrong. Take profit defines where the expected reward no longer justifies continued exposure.
Stop Placement
A structure-based stop belongs beyond the swing, zone, or pattern that validates the trade. Add a volatility or spread buffer when normal market noise could touch the raw level.
If the valid stop creates excessive monetary risk, reduce lot size or skip the trade. Moving the stop closer only to preserve volume changes the strategy.
Target Planning
Targets can use opposing structure, liquidity, average range, pivot levels, or a fixed reward-to-risk ratio. The first obstacle should be considered before assuming a distant target.
Partial exits and break-even rules must be tested because they can reduce both drawdown and average winner size.
Practical Checklist
- Identify invalidation first.
- Calculate volume from stop distance.
- Verify room to the target.
