How to Use Parabolic SAR for Trend Management
Apply Parabolic SAR for trailing exits and trend management while limiting whipsaws in ranges.
Parabolic SAR plots points above or below price to represent an accelerating trailing level. It is more effective in directional movement than in sideways markets.
Entries and Exits
A flip from above price to below price can confirm bullish momentum, while the opposite can confirm bearish momentum. Using every flip as an entry usually causes overtrading.
Many traders use SAR primarily as a trailing exit after entry from structure or another setup. This separates signal quality from exit management.
Avoiding Whipsaw
Filter signals with a moving average, ADX, or higher-timeframe structure. In a range, SAR points can alternate rapidly.
The acceleration settings control sensitivity. Faster settings protect profit sooner but exit healthy pullbacks more often.
Practical Checklist
- Confirm a trend before using SAR.
- Consider it as an exit tool.
- Test acceleration settings.
