Forex Trading Sessions and the Best Time to Trade
Understand Asian, London, and New York sessions and how liquidity changes through the trading day.
Forex trades around the clock on weekdays, but market quality is not constant. Each session has different participants, volatility, and instrument behavior.
Session Characteristics
The Asian session often produces measured ranges in many major pairs, while JPY, AUD, and NZD instruments may be more active. London generally brings deeper liquidity and stronger movement in European currencies.
New York adds US data and dollar flow. The London-New York overlap is often the most liquid period, but news risk can also be highest.
Matching Strategy to Session
Breakout strategies often prefer expanding liquidity. Range strategies may prefer quieter conditions. Scalpers should measure spread and execution at the exact hours they trade.
Use one time zone consistently in journals and automation. Daylight-saving changes can shift the relationship between broker time and local sessions.
Practical Checklist
- Mark session opens on the chart.
- Track spread by hour.
- Avoid opening directly before major news unless planned.
